This year FreshChoice and SuperValue Supermarkets are celebrating Māori Language Week (Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori) by providing downloadable Māori language posters, colouring resources and matching cards.  The initiative is being applauded by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori – the Māori Language Commission.

There are twenty three coloured posters and colouring pages of everyday food and other items that are found in a supermarket. The 23 items have also been collated into a downloadable matching cards sets which can be used as a memory game.

The resources, which have been translated by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori are designed to help parents and educators teach children and themselves Te Reo Māori and engage with tamariki about words, colours and letters.

All FreshChoice and SuperValue Supermarkets for the week commencing the 27th July will have the posters by the 23 items to encourage customers to learn the Māori word. The colouring in pages will also be available for customers to pick up.

Mark Brosnan, General Manager of FreshChoice and SuperValue supermarkets says “we are proud to support Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori in our supermarkets this year and encourage parents and schools to use the resources”.

Liz de Lange, SuperValue and FreshChoice Brands Manager comments “The idea is to provide resources for parents and teachers to engage with their tamariki about Te Reo Māori in a fun and interactive way. These resources not only are a great for children but also assist with parents learning more Te Reo Māori. Colouring is fun for both parents and children.”

The resources were developed with assistance from Abacus Montessori Preschool in Christchurch. Kim Thompson, their Team Leader comments “The children are engaged and really enjoying this practical life activity. We ensure the curriculum offered to children incorporates Te Reo, waiata and tikanga practices and are thankful for the resources”

FreshChoice and SuperValue Supermarkets have set up a photo competition where parents and teachers can upload photos of their activities using the resources to share with other parents and schools. Liz de Lange says: “It is great to share experiences with other parents and teachers on how they have used the resources”. All entries will be in the draw for 3 chances to win $250 of Huia books. The competition closes on the 9th August.

FreshChoice Ranui in Auckland are celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori by having an event at the supermarket Tuesday 28th July 11am. Pranil Ranchhod, owner of FreshChoice Supermarket comments “The event marks not only the opening of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori at our supermarket but also celebrates new bilingual signage instore. On Tuesday children from the local Rānui Primary School will be doing a kapa haka performance and speaking at the opening. During the week children from the school will be speaking Te Reo Māori over our PA system so they can gain confidence speaking Te Reo Māori in public.

There are sixty SuperValue and FreshChoice Supermarkets spread from Ruakaka to Invercargill. All of the supermarkets are owned and operated by locals and are proud to support the local community.

This year’s theme for Māori Language Week is ‘whāngaihia te reo ki ngā mātua – nuture the language in parents/caregivers.’
